Prototype Overview
By 1967, Clyde had delivered 42 of the very successful 1460 Class locomotives to QR. The availability of the new 1650 horsepower EMD 645E engine led to an order for 19 new 90 ton locomotives which were essentially an improved and upgraded version of the 1460 Class.
In addition to the new engine, fuel capacity of the new locomotives was increased by 18% to 1,070 gallons by the fitting of an auxiliary fuel tank behind the front headstock.
The new locomotives were to retain the appearance of the 1460 Class and the first locomotives delivered from the new order were initially referred to as 1460 Class. Running numbers also followed on from the 1460 Class numbering sequence commencing with 1502.
Shortly after their introduction to service, a decision was made to separate them into a class of their own due to the number of new features introduced, and they were to be referred to as the 1502 Class. Class leader 1502 was delivered to QR in October 1967. A further order for 10 followed which brought the total number of 1502's built to 29. All locomotives of the 1502 Class were in service by August 1969.
During their production, two significant milestones were reached. Locomotive 1513 was the 100th Clyde Diesel Electric Locomotive built in Queensland, and 1528 was the 150th Clyde DEL built for QR.
There are a number of external features which distinguish the 1502 Class from the earlier 1460 Class locomotives.
The 1502's were delivered in the standard blue/grey QR colour scheme of the period, but during 1969 a tan/brown rectangle was painted on the front headstock to indicate the position of the auxiliary fuel tank. This was applied following a workshop incident as a safety warning to staff not to use welding or cutting equipment on this area of the headstock. The same feature was also introduced for the 1720 Class at the same time.
A main distinguishing feature of the 1502 Class is the three exhaust stacks fitted to the top of the locomotive. This feature was unique to the class and the only QR Clyde type to have this exhaust arrangement. Some other features of the 1502 which distinguish it from the 1460 Class include new engine bay doors without grills, different side handrails forward of the cab, and an above footplate refueling point on both sides of the loco.
In service with QR the 1502's were very highly regarded, and for a number of years considered to be the best of the 90 ton units then in service. Most of the class was based at Mayne, but two were allocated to Willowburn depot (Toowoomba). Like the 1460 Class, the 1502's could be found working the entire QR main line system, and at the head of express passenger trains, as well as general freight traffic. They were also commonly used on Brisbane suburban trains.
The 1502 Class quickly became the preferred motive power for passenger trains where it was found that the extra available power of the 1502 Class allowed faster and smother acceleration. . From late 1969 the timetable for the "Sunlander" was updated once the 1502's were introduced to the roster, with about 40 minutes slashed from the Brisbane to Cairns route. 1502's commonly worked the "Sunlander" to Cairns, and the "Westlander" as far as Roma.
By the mid 1990's, no further major overhaul of the fleet was planned due to later Clyde types previously used on coal traffic now transferred to duties which were once the main work role of the 1502 Class. Due to them having dual driving stations they were still in demand for general freight duties and suburban train services in South East Queensland. They were capable of running to destinations where no locomotive turning facilities were available and run back without the need to turn. 1502's were used on some of the last locomotive hauled suburban services as late as 1997.
By the late 1990's the 1502 fleet was looking very untidy and well overdue for a repaint. Five were selected for repainting in the new "Broncos" corporate scheme in 1998. The five were repainted at Redbank, and the locomotives selected to wear the new livery were 1503, 1510, 1520, 1523, and 1526.
Withdrawals from the fleet commenced in 1995 with the sale of 1521 to New Zealand Railways (Tranz Rail) in September 1995. New Zealand Railways also purchased 1502 in May 1997, as well as 1508 and 1522 in June 1997.
The 1502 Class remained in QR service until December 1999, when all remaining units were stored at Redbank with an uncertain future.
In September 2002, 1504 was selected for conversion to standard gauge (1435mm) for QR subsidiary Interail Australia to use in Northern New South Wales. The conversion work was undertaken by Redbank Workshops and would utilize the latest QR "Maxi" cab design combined with a new low profile nose. Former NSWGR 49 Class bogies were fitted to provide the gauge conversion. Initially the newly converted loco was referred to as the 4750 Class and numbered 4751. However this was changed to the 423 Class before delivery to Interail, and the loco renumbered to 42301. Five other 1502's were selected for conversion to 423 Class. 1507 was converted to 42302 in September 2002, 1518 to 42303 in February 2004, 1524 to 42304 in May 2004, 1526 to 42305 in March 2005, and 1520 to 42306 in March 2005.
In July 2005 Locomotives 1506, 1512, 1517, 1519, 1523, 1525, and 1530 were sold to FCAB in Chile and loaded onto ships at the Port of Brisbane for the voyage the South America. FCAB also purchased 1509, 1510, 1511, 1515, 1516, 1527, 1528, and 1529 in November 2011 for export to Chile.
Another QR subsidiary, ARG (Australian Railroad Group), converted 1513 and 1514 to the AC Class for operation in Western Australia. 1513 became AC 1520 in December 2006, and 1514 became AC 1521 in October 2007. Later ARG changed the class to the AD Class and the two locomotives became AD 1520, and AD 1521.
By 2010 only 1503 and 1505 remained in storage at Redbank. They were sold to Tasrail for parts, and salvage was completed on site at Redbank before the locos were scrapped in November 2010.
